I have taught at the college level for over 30 years. I have initiated two photography departments. The first in 1974 at the School of Art, Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute in Utica, New York. The second at the Art Department of the University of Southern Maine, Portland, Maine where I am currently employed as a where I am currently employed as Distinguished Professor of Art. These positions involved designing the physical structures of lab and studios, obtaining equipment, writing the curriculum, securing accreditation, and continual updating from traditional to digital imaging.

I enjoy teaching. It has enhanced my thinking about photography and my creative output. I always teach from a place of my evolving creative interests and consider the social, cultural, and political times. Having to articulate ideas to students and seeing them struggle to make a visual image that has clarity, depth, and voice is a rewarding challenge.
